The first three characters of every VIN identify who built the vehicle and where. They are assigned under ISO 3779 and have meant the same thing since 1981, which is why a VIN beginning JN8 can be attributed without looking anything else up. This prefix covers: Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle (MPV).
